A touching coming-of-age memoir piece set in 1949. Burma Shave signs, milkshakes, Civil War monuments, movies, diner food, Shady Court motels, Conoco stations, and the summer heat mark the way as family drives from Chicago across Iowa and Nebraska to Lander, Wyoming. A Southern belle mother and her college professor husband spend the summer closed in together in a two-door Ford with their ten-year-old daughter who tries to figure out life and ignore the signs that she’ll never take this ride again.

ROAD SIGNS MEMOIR SUMMERS ON THE ROAD TO LANDER eBook Julia Hardin Hansen

This insightful memoir, told from the perspective of a ten year-old stuck in the back seat of a car in the fifties while traveling from Chicago to Wyoming for her summer vacation perfectly recreates the child's eye view of the world in the fifties. She tries to put together snippets of conversations her parents are trying to hide, manage high expectations for indulgences on the road her necessarily frugal mother has to quash and engages in flights of fancy with her parents to make the miles go by quickly, such as watching the road signs and singing songs that show the deep bonds in this family. Utterly engaging and memorable.

ROAD SIGNS MEMOIR SUMMERS ON THE ROAD TO LANDER eBook Julia Hardin Hansen Reviews

Driving west in an era where a bucket of ice in front of a vent was air-conditioning, a girl of 10 begins to understand something profound about her parents and herself. The road signs here point the way past Burma Shave signs to the people they were each in the process of becoming. . . .
Families had to find ways to entertain themselves on long road trips.

Singing songs & playing games to pass the time.

I especially enjoyed the references to the famous Burma Shave billboards.
Seems kind of interesting but doesn't go anywhere. Just ends abruptly.

Glad it was free on unlimited.
I would be really disappointed if I had purchased it.
My thoughts return to 60 years ago while on the narrow and twisting highways from the flat lands of Illinois to Northern Wisconsin and our family's annual one week vacation to the North Woods. The road trip was just as enchanting, although not nearly as long, as the venture West. Departing at. 4 AM and scouting the Burma Shave signs while traversing from prairies to lakes and pines with frequent jaunts through the idyllic villages of Wisconsin was a time we kids eagerly anticipated. And now, viewed through the melancholic reflections in the autumn of our long journey through life, if only we could thank our parents, our aunts , our uncles, our brothers, our sisters, and our cousins for the sweet memories that have lasted a lifetime, from the fresh raspberry sundae at the Dairy Delite to the last beer at the HI Hat in Land O Lakes. Thank you Ms Hansen.
This was a lovely gentle story of bygone days when road trips were an adventure and going to see family a treat. This story ended all too soon. I could have read twice as much if only the book were longer .....sigh!
Hansen 's melodic prose captures the feeling of the timeless stretch of childhood summers. For those who remember chaotic car trips trapped in the back seat with uncooperative siblings, Hansen's memoir of the life of an only child should be an interesting change of pace.
An OK story of the Burma Shave signs but a much better option if you want all the signs is "The Verse by the Side of the Road." This book lists almost every Burma Shave Sign ever printed.
